the middle way, commission piece
2024
commisson piece
The brief from a private client was for a piece of art that embodied tranquility, brings calm and balance into a space.
Also holding resemblance to a rose and something that she could take female refuge in. To come back to her centre.
The spirit of the tortoise - patience, longevity and inner equilibrium.
“the spiritual energy of the tortoise inspires us to create boundaries, both physical and emotional, to protect ourselves from negative influences and maintain our inner equilibrium. With its close connection to the earth, the tortoise becomes a symbol of stability and rootedness. The spiritual medicine of the tortoise encourages us to anchor ourselves in the present moment, to stay centerd amidst life’s turbulence, and to cultivate a deep sense of inner peace. By embracing the tortoise’s spirit of grounding, we can find solace in simplicity, release unnecessary worries, and maintain a steady course in the face of change’
In this piece patience came as s strong message to take time to complete tasks, not to rush and to trust the process and its obstacles. Seeing obstacles as a means to overcome and discover something new rather than a blockage.
This ties together with longevity as to take time with things and not to rush produces long lasting effects and lessons to carry through life rather than temporal fixes.
Inner equilibrium touches me a lot with this piece as it is a point of retuning to a place of centring and finding a sense of peace. Inner equilibrium is a life time discovery which is why the spirit of the tortoise is so powerful, due to their longevity in life.
3 central points
The root, the base and the gut which is the point directing us to our intuition and sense of feeling, The second central point being our solar plexus where we find our courage and strength. The third one being the mind, the place of thought, intellect and connection to the upper realms.
All 3 points are important to be aligned to come to healthy conclusions, actions and a peaceful life.
A message
With this piece a message was that we can sometimes use our minds more heavily and we become weighed down by thought, likewise sometimes we can use our root, sense of intuition and feeling to much and be governed by only our feelings. Forgetting about the intellectual mind which can help us realise which feelings are worth listening to and which ones are reactive and fearful.
Finally sometimes we act only from the centre of courage and strength which can be ego centric and negate the mind and intuition.
The main idea
The main idea with these three points is to discover how they work together to come to the central point. To discover how the mind and thoughts can be useful when we align them with the intuition and the sense of feeling, brining those two points to the centre solar plexus to take actions from there.
Finding balance and alignment is when all these points are in agreement with each other rather than in conflict.
So to take time, be patient with our thoughts and feelings before taking action. The middle way is when we find that inner peace and we are unfuckable with because all points are in agreement and moving in one direction.
Symbols in this piece
6 points of the inner shape - hexagon. An alchemist symbol to finding equilibrium, peace and harmony. Joining different points to get new ideas and outcomes.
Inside the hexagon the form is moving in 5 directions. The symbol of 5 directions recognises the 5 elements, fire, air, water, earth and spirit.
3 points. The symbol of alignment between the mind, core and the root.
The sacred flower. Flowers are usually a message of harmony and the perfect design of nature, a totem of blossoming, following the seasons and a symbol of small beauties in nature that reflect the larger functioning body.
At first the petals bloom and as we look closer into the core they start to reveal the sacred geometry. This reminds us that the closer we get to the core the closer we get to seeing the harmony within us.
